Pet Rabbit Info

Intro

The type of cage and size varies mostly on three factors. Rabbit breed(size),  space in your home, and wether your cage is indoors or outdoors.  As with many things bigger is always better. You should try and get the biggest cage you can.

Breeds/Size

Flemish Giant, New Zeleands, and French Lop are bigger rabbits and need larger cages. Dwarf, Dutch, mini rex and mini lops rabbits are smaller and tend to need less space. Then there are rabbits like the rex and English Spot which need a cage in the middle. The general rule is that the cage should be 4 times the size of your rabbit at minium. SMaller rabbits can get away with a 24X36 cage. Medium rabbits a 30X36. Then large rabbits since they can be anywhere from 9-19lbs can bste hard to set a number. A minium of 36X40 is my estimate.

Indoors or Outdoors

My suggestion is to keep your rabbit indoors. This is best for both you an dthe rabbit. You will be able to enjoy your rabbit more fully if you keep him or her inside. You will be able to see him or her every day and it will be easier for you to feed and giver her water. Keeping your rabbit indoors keeps it from being exposed to the harsh outdoor elements. Your rabbit should have a full protection form any percipitation and extreme temptures(both heat and cold). Some places it will be easier to protect your rabbit then others. Ultimately it is your desicion, but please know that an indoor rabbit is likely to live a longer and healthier life than an outdoor rabbit.

Homemade Cages

This a popular option as a good rabbit cage or raised hutch can be well over a hundred dollars. There are two ways people generally make rabbit cages. Ideally an indoor cage should allow a rabbit to get in and out if the door let open, but is sometimes disregarded in store bought cages and homemade cages.

The first way is to make a CC cage. CC cages are generally made for guinea pigs but with a few of height adjustments. These cages are easy to adjust to fit in the area that you have allowed. CC cages are made of Cubes adn Coroplast. The cubes are made from storage cubings. Which are wire-like peices that should be tied together to provide walling. Coroplast is what they use to make store signs out of. For complete information you can visit HERE!

The second way is similar to a CC Cage, but uses only cubes. I like to call this method Condo Cage.  I found this cage style and directions scanning the web one day. This looks like one of the best cages I have ever seen and is fairly simple. Take a look for yourself!CLICK HERE!

The last method is popular for people with the tools for this cage. This cage is a wire cage with wooden frame. These cages normally feature a wire bottom that drops into a tray in an idoor cage or onto the ground in out door cages. Grass mats should be offered to help protect there feet from getting sores. Also after he or she is fully litter box trained a piece of wood could also be offered. the sizes can be any size and are usually rectangles as that is the most practical shape. This can be a complicated or simple project depending on the avalibilty of tools and background in working with mesh wire and wood. Here is one design that is fairly nice. CLICK HERE!
