Pet Rabbit Info

General

There are many breeds of domesticated rabbits. I will do my best to name all the ones I know and have researched. So if you have found I have missed one breed please tell me.

American

Varieties: Blue and White

Weight: Bucks: 9~11
                Does: 10~12

A compact rabbit with medium wieght and bone. A common rabbit in petstores.

American Fuzzy Lop

Groups: Agouti, broken, pointed white, self, shaded, and solid.

Colors: Agouti-Chestnust, lynx, opal, Squirrel, Pionted White, Selfblack, blue, Chocolate, lilac, Self (Blue eyed white and ruby eyed white)-white shaded- Sable point, Siamese Sable, Siamese Smoke pearl, tortoise shell, solid fawn, orange.

Weight: Bucks and Does~ under 4lbs

This rabbit has a coby and short body.  Staring at the shouldeds there should be some deph. The head should be well rounded. This rabbit was bred for its wool. The woold should be dense and even. These rabbits were bred from two Holland lops. This breed was reconized by ARBA in 1988.

American Sable

Colors: Rich sepia brown on ears, face, back, and outside of legs, and the upper side of the tail. Saddle collor will consistently gradate to a paler tone on flanks and underbelly & tail.
Weight: Bucks: 7~9
                Does: 8~10

Hindquarters should be well rounded and smooth. Ther should be unbroken continous  curves.

 

Angora

Comapct Cobby apperance. A ood full uniform of wool . Should resemble a ball of fluff. The head should have heavy bangs, side trimmings, and heavily tasseled ears. Legs, tail, and feet should be covered in wool to the extreme. They must be brushed every day.

French:
Groups: Aoutim Pointed White, Self,  Shaded, Solid, Ticked

Weight: Bucks: 7 1/2~10 1/2lbs
                Does: 7 1/2~10 1/2lbs

This breed is an older breed than the English version. The wool shuld be 2.5-3.5 inches. Medium length body with full chest. The ears may be tufted but it is not perferred.

Giant:

This rabbits sould look well nourished and firmly fleshed. The ideal specimen should have a well banlanced body. The greater the wool the better. This is the biggest angora rabbit.

Satin:
Groups: Agouti, Pointed White, Self, Shaded, Solid, Ticked

Weight: Bucks: 6~overlbs
                Does:    6~overlbs
This breed was "created" with the mating of a satin and French angora. This breed has incedibly soft fur. There are no furnishings on the face, ears, or feet.

Belgian Hare

Color: Red and Chestnut

Weight: Bucks: 6~9 1/2lbs
                Does: 6~9 1/2lbs

This breed has a long streamline body and arched back. It has long, slender legs. The fur lies close the body and has somewhat of a coarse/harsh texture. It is incredibley fast. 



Bevern

Varieties: White, Blue, Black

Weight: Bucks: 8~10lbs
                Does: 9~11 lbs

This breed is fats growing and it is a medium body length. It has a meaty and slightly arched back. The blue variety should be a clean shade of lavander blue all the way down to the skin.

Britannia Petite

Colors: White and black

Weight: Bucks: Less than 2.5lbs
                Does: less than 2.5lbs

This is a small rabbit. But this rabbit has a big spirit. This rabbit is slendor and fineboned. These rabbits have a more wild nature and aren't the best pets for beginners.

Californian

Colors: white with black

Weight: Bucks: 8~10lbs
                Does: 8 1/2~10 lbs

This is always a white rabbit with colored nose, ears, feet, and tail. The color should be as black as possible. The body should be plumpan dhave full hips.

Champagne D' Argent

Color:  Silver

 

Weight: Bucks: 9~11lbs
                Does: 9 1/2~12 lbs

This is one of the oldest domesticated rabbit breeds. It has been bred in France for over one hundred years. The desired colors for this breed is the color of old silver or the pale color of skim milk with no hint of yellow. The young of this breed are born black and slowly graduate to silver after 4 months of age.

Checkered Giant

Colors: Black or blue marks on white coat

Weight: Bucks: 11lbs and over
                Does: 12lbs and over

The first Checkered Giant was brought to the US in 1910. The butterfly across the nose, eye circles, cherk spots, ears, spine marking, tail, and side markings are clear and distinct. They are one of the biggest rabbit breeds.

Chinchilla

Cinnamon

Color: Rust or cinnamon (darker colors may be present)

Weight: Bucks: 8 1/2~10 1/2lbs
                Does: 9~11 lbs

This rabbit was "created" in Montanna in 1960's. This rabbit should have a well shaped head that is proportionate to there body.

 

Creme D' Argent ~

Color: Creamy orange

Weight: Bucks: 8~10 1/2lbs
                Does: 8 1/2~11 lbs

This breed is similar to Champagne, though smaller. It has a bright orange right down to the skin.

Dutch

Varieties: Black, Blue, Chocolate, Tortise, Steel, and Grey

Weight: Bucks: 3 1/2~5 1/2lbs
                Does: 3 1/2~5 1/2 lbs

This is a popular breed in America. Although they are quite small they are meaty, compact, and cobby.

Dwarf Hotot

Weight: Bucks: 3 1/2lbs max.
                Does: 3 1/2lbs max.

This is a smaller version of the Hotot. The distinguishing feature of this breed is the a thin line of black around the eyes. It should be narrow uniform and without breaks or feathering.

English Spot

 Varieties: Black, Blue, Chocolate, Gold, Gray, Lilac, Tortiose,

Color: Colored markings on white base fur

Weight: Bucks: 5~8lbs
                Does: 5~8lbs

 This is an old rabbit breed that was imported from England. The spots on an English Spot should progress from the ears down. The spots should be not too few, not too many, not too small, not too large. A perfect specimen is a breeders pride. The spots are the most important part of this breeds coat.

Flemish Giant

Varieties: Steel gray, light grey, sandy, black, blue, white, and fawn 

Weight: Bucks: 13lbs and over
                Does: 14lbs and over 

This is one of the most popular giant breeds. It is one of the oldest, most known, and strongest reconized breeds of rabbits. Flemish Giants are powerful and should show a massive build that is well balanced.

Florida White ~

Color: White
 

Weight: Bucks: 4~6lbs
                Does: 4~6 lbs

This breed was orginally bred for research purposes. This breed was created in 1960s in Florida. This rabbit is always white with pink eyes. They are smaller rabbits.

Harlequin

Groups: Japanese and Magpie

Varieties: Black, blue, chocolate, and lilac

Weight: Bucks: 6 1/2~9lbs
                Does: 7~9 1/2 lbs

The signature of this rabbit is having there head spilt into two colors down the middle. Also the legs of this rabbit should alternate colors. The ears should be the two different colors, too.

Havana

The fur of this rabbit should be soft and have a high sheen. This a small, meaty, cobby rabbit. This rabbit was first bred in 1896 in the Netherlands.

 

Himalayan

Himalayan rabbits are another one of the older rabbit breeds. These rabbits are with with a black splotch above the nose including there nose with black ears and black ears. There feet and tail are also a rich velvety black. 

 

 

Hotot

This rabbit isn't as well known as other rabbit breeds, but is still pretty well known. They are known for there charecteristic black band around there black eyes. Otherwise they should be pure white with erect ears.

Jersey Wooly

 Groups: Agouti, Pointed White, Self, Shaded, Tan pattern

Weight: Bucks: 3 1/2lbs and under
                Does: 3 1/2 lbs and under

 The Jersey Wooly is another new wool breed. They are avalible in a wide variety of colors. The ears should not have large tufts or tassles, but may carry small tufts.

 

Lilac ~

Color: Dove-gray w/ pinkish tint

Weight: Bucks: 5 1/2~7 1/2lbs
                Does: 6~8 lbs

This breed is robust and energetic. They should exhibit roundness and balance. The fur should be soft to the touch and very dense and silky.

Lion Head


Weight Bucks and Does: 2.5-4lbs

This is one of the newest and most popular rabbit breeds. It has long fur. It is one of the most popular long haired rabbits. They come in a wide variety of colors nad get there name for the way there fur looks like a lion's mane. There ears are rather short and hard to see with there long fluffy fur.

Lop ~

Weight: Bucks: 9lbs and over
                Does: 10lbs and over

The English lop has a massive build. They have large drooping ears that often drag slightly on the ground. About 21 inches long. They are  often called "King of the Fancy."

These rabbits are often known to express loving nature and kind hearted. Their ears and crown should represent a horse shoe.

Holland
:
Groups: Agouti, Brindled, broken, Self, Shaded, Solid, Ticked

Colors: All colors within the reconized groups

Weight: Bucks: 4lbs and under
                Does: 4lbs and under

They are solid and stocky. Their ears should hang nears their head. They are known to express a lively and inquisitive behavoir

Mini Lop

Groups: Agouti, Brindled, broken, Self, Shaded, Solid, Ticked

Colors: All colors within the reconized groups

Weight: Bucks: 4 1/2lbs~ 6 1/2lbs
                Does: 4 1/2lbs ~6 1/2lbs

Does of this breed are known for their excellent motherly instict. This rabbit is sometimes reffered to as the German Lop.

Mini Rex

Varieties:Blue, Californian, Castor, Chinchilla, Opal, Lynx, Red, Seal, Tortiose, White, Broken
 

Weight: Bucks: 3 ~ 4 1/4lbs
               Does: 3 1/4 lbs ~4 1/2lbs

This rabbit should have extremely soft fur that feels similar to velevet.  This rabbit is smaller than the true rex and should be short and uniform.

Netherland Dwarf

Colors: Almost any color 

Weight: Bucks:  under 2 1/2lbs
                Does: under 2 1/2 lbs

 This is one of the smallest rabbits that is domesticated. This rabbit is one of the most popular rabbits to be kept as pets. Its colors and patterns are wide ranged. The body is dense and cobby. The ears should also be small for their size.
 

New Zealands ~

Varieties: Black, Red, white

Weight: Bucks: 9lbs~ 11lbs
                Does: 10lbs ~12lbs

This rabbit is considered an all-purpose rabbit. It is bred to be a pet, for fur, for show, and for meat. This rabbit is well-fleshed and balance.

Palomino

 This rabbit was bred in the United States. This rabbit is similar to the New Zealand Rabbit. Its color is attractive to the eyes. This is a utilty rabbit, it is well fleshed and well balanced. 

 

Polish

Varieties: Black, Blue, Chocolate, Blue-eyed white. Ruby-eyed white.

Weight: Bucks: not over 3 1/2
                Does: not over 3 1/2

 This is bred as a show rabbit,exculsively. Though, they still make good pets. They are small compact and well rounded. 
 

Rex

Varieties: Black, Black otter, Blue, Californian, castor, Chinchilla, Chocolate, Lilac, Lynx, Opal, Red, Sable, Seal, white, broken group

Weight: Bucks: 7 1/2~ 9 1/2lbs

 The rex rabbit's gaurd hairs are the same length as their undercoat. This creates a short coat that is unbelivibly soft. This breed was developed from a single rabbit that was mutated.

Color: White w/ black and bright golden-orange marking.

                Does: 7~10lbs
